2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, the 2010 Lakeland High School field hockey team from the City of Suffolk capped a perfect season (24 - 0) by winning the Virginia High School League Group AAA state field hockey championship; and
WHEREAS, on its way to the state championship, the Lakeland High School field hockey team won the Southeastern District championship and the Eastern Region championship; and
WHEREAS, the tenacious Lakeland High School field hockey team then defeated McLean High School and Stafford High School to advance to the championship game against Mountain View High School; and
WHEREAS, Mountain View High School came out strong and put strong pressure on the experienced Lakeland High School field hockey team, but the Lady Cavaliers managed to score two goals before the half; and
WHEREAS, eleven minutes into the second half, the Lady Cavaliers sent in their final goal and shutout the Lady Wildcats to take home their first state championship; and
WHEREAS, Kendell Combs led the Lady Cavaliers with the three goals and finished her Lakeland High School career with 109 goals; fellow senior Kelsey Smither had 124 assists in her four varsity seasons, a national high school record according to topofthecircle.com; and
WHEREAS, the entire Lakeland High School field hockey team, led by eight seniors, practiced hard throughout the season; their hard work paid off with an undefeated season allowing only four goals throughout the entire season; and
WHEREAS, the triumphant 2010 season of the Lakeland High School field hockey team is a tribute to the skill and perseverance of the athletes, the leadership of Head Coach Tara Worley, and the support of the students, faculty, and staff of Lakeland High School; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Lakeland High School field hockey team on their outstanding 2010 season and on winning the 2010 Virginia High School League Group AAA state field hockey championship; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Tara Worley as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for the championship performance of the Lakeland High School field hockey team.
