11103005DWHEREAS, individuals who work in public safety provide a valuable service in often stressful circumstances and in various locations while interacting with and observing a variety of people; and
WHEREAS, corrections officers perform essential supervision and security duties in institutional settings throughout the Commonwealth that help those institutions meet their public safety missions; and
WHEREAS, corrections officers supervise offenders while they are in the institution and also while in transport to ensure their safety and the safety of those around them, which necessitates a keen sense of observation and a high level of agility; and
WHEREAS, corrections officers must also interact with other staff, visitors, and the public, all while maintaining orderly and secure operations; and
WHEREAS, in addition to their other duties, corrections officers keep detailed records regarding their own tasks and document their observations of offenders; and
WHEREAS, corrections officers perform their many duties oftentimes in institutions that have constantly changing populations, requiring corrections officers to be flexible and quick learners; and
WHEREAS, corrections officers provide an invaluable service to corrections institutions and the public across the Commonwealth; and
WHEREAS, Corrections Officer Day will provide Virginians an opportunity to learn more about and reflect on the essential duties corrections officers perform; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly designate March 16, in 2011 and in each succeeding year, as Corrections Officer Day in Virginia; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates post the designation of this day on the General Assembly’s website.
