2011 SESSION
WHEREAS, Colonel Walter Wayne Miller, USAF (Ret.) of Frederick County, a decorated officer and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, died on July 2, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Frederick County, Walter Miller was born to loving parents Walter and Marjorie Miller and graduated from Gainesboro High School; and
WHEREAS, after receiving a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Walter Miller earned a commission in the United States Air Force; and
WHEREAS, a respected officer, Colonel Miller held command and staff positions in various units through his career as he proudly served his country; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Miller particularly enjoyed the Training Command, where he taught others to fly combat, and the Check Section of the Communications Command, where he oversaw the checking of radar systems and satellites all over the United States; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Miller earned the following decorations before his retirement in 1982: the Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with Five Oak Leaf Clusters, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Miller also received the Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with Two Oak Leaf Clusters and V Device, Bronze Star, Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, Legion of Merit with Oak Leaf Cluster, and Meritorious Service Medal; and
WHEREAS, after his long and successful career with the United States Air Force, Colonel Miller retired back to Virginia and worked for Frederick County as the zoning administrator, where his strong leadership and administrative skills were a great asset; and
WHEREAS, Colonel Miller actively involved himself in the community through the Round Hill Ruritan Club, where he enthusiastically served as president; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Colonel Miller will be fondly remembered for his kind heart and sense of humor and greatly missed by his loving wife of over 55 years, Wilda; their children, Paula and Jerry, and their wonderful families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a decorated officer and respected citizen of the Commonwealth, Colonel Walter Wayne Miller, USAF (Ret.); and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel Walter Wayne Miller, USAF (Ret.) as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
