Celebrating the life of William Lloyd Sherman.

WHEREAS, William Lloyd Sherman, a beloved community supporter and respected citizen of Roanoke, died on November 17, 2010; and

WHEREAS, William “Bill” Sherman was born on June 13, 1939, in Roanoke to loving parents James Lewis and Lizzie Pearl Sherman and was one of three siblings; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sherman was a proud graduate of Lucy Addison High School, Class of 1957, and Bluefield State College, Class of 1966; he remained in close contact with his classmates throughout his life and was a member of the Bluefield State College Alumni Association; and

WHEREAS, a valued and hard-working employee, Bill Sherman enjoyed an exemplary career at the General Electric Company in Salem that lasted 35 years until his retirement in 1997; and

WHEREAS, a member of Omega Psi Phi fraternity, Bill Sherman joined the Gamma Alpha Chapter in 2001 and became actively involved in its many community service projects; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sherman served as chairman of the social committee and as a member of the Christmas Toy Drive and housing committees; he called upon his brothers to assist at the Roanoke Area Ministries and RAM House and participated in the Thanksgiving Basket Project; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sherman received the Superior Service Award from the Gamma Alpha Chapter in 2008 in recognition of his dedication and hard work on behalf of others; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sherman also volunteered at the Robert Hopkins Golf Tournament and served as a mentor at Oakland Elementary School; and

WHEREAS, a man of great faith, Bill Sherman was an active member of High Street Baptist Church, where he was a member of the intermediate usher board and the church bus driver; and

WHEREAS, from his passionate love of golf to his commitment to community service, Bill Sherman brought a lively sense of humor and tremendous work ethic to all his endeavors that made him a friend to many; and

WHEREAS, a devoted father, Bill Sherman will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his children, Tara, Kia, and Anthony, and their wonderful families; and his many other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved community supporter and respected citizen of Roanoke, William Lloyd Sherman; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Lloyd Sherman as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
