Celebrating the life of Thelma Rose Crump Wilson.

WHEREAS, Thelma Rose Crump Wilson, a beloved community advocate from New Kent County, died on June 17, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of South Dakota, Thelma Wilson was born on October 21, 1911, and raised in Montana; she lived in Florida before she married the late Grosjean Graves Crump, Sr., and came to New Kent County in 1932; and

WHEREAS, during her more than 75 years in New Kent County, Thelma Wilson generously gave of her time and talents by enthusiastically supporting her beloved community in a variety of ways; and

WHEREAS, a justice of the peace and marriage commissioner, Thelma Wilson married over 1,200 couples in New Kent County; she also served as a volunteer with the Red Cross and member of the Martha Dandridge Women’s Club and Rotary Club; and

WHEREAS, a respected figure in the community, Thelma Wilson served as president of the New Kent County Chamber of Commerce, where she worked to promote the community’s many business interests; and

WHEREAS, a strong and vocal advocate of bringing horseracing to New Kent County, Thelma Wilson was instrumental in the formation of Colonial Downs, which continues to positively impact the economy of the county today; and

WHEREAS, in addition to her many community endeavors, Thelma Wilson raised six wonderful children and enjoyed spending time with her 15 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Wilson was employed by and retired from the Selective Service System, where she was a valued employee; she was also a lifetime real estate broker; and

WHEREAS, Thelma Wilson’s vivacious spirit, strong work ethic, and genuine commitment and love for her community set an extraordinary example for her fellow citizens to follow; and

WHEREAS, preceded in death by her second husband, John Wilson, Thelma Wilson will be greatly missed by her six children, Grosjean, Thomas, Jeane, Lehre, Inez, and Bobby and their families; numerous other family members and friends; and the New Kent County community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a beloved community advocate, Thelma Rose Crump Wilson; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thelma Rose Crump Wilson as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
