WHEREAS, Kirby Hugh Porter, a former Commonwealth’s Attorney for Hanover County, died on July 13, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Oklahoma, Kirby Porter was born on May 5, 1960, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree from Radford University and earned a law degree from the George Mason University School of Law; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to public service, Kirby Porter was an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for the City of Richmond before moving to Hanover, where he also served as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney; and

WHEREAS, in 1999 Kirby Porter was elected as the Commonwealth’s Attorney for Hanover County and, after a successful first term, was reelected for a second term in 2003; and

WHEREAS, a skillful attorney, Kirby Porter assisted state and federal prosecutors with the prosecution of the Beltway Sniper suspects and helped exonerate a wrongly convicted local man among many other notable legal accomplishments; and

WHEREAS, in 2008 Kirby Porter established his own private practice, Kirby Porter Attorney at Law, to assist residents in all matters of law; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the needs of the community, Kirby Porter generously gave of his time and talents as past president and board member of the Hanover Ruritan Club, member of the American Legion Post 175, and member of the Community Criminal Justice Board; and

WHEREAS, Kirby Porter also served as a member of the Mechanicsville Businessmen’s Association, Patrick Henry YMCA board, Hanover Association of Businesses and Chamber of Commerce, and Mechanicsville United Methodist Church; and

WHEREAS, Kirby Porter leaves behind his wife of 17 years, Jennifer; his children Christine, Jack, Caroline, and Kathryn; and numerous other family members, friends, and colleagues; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with sadness the loss of a dedicated attorney and community supporter, Kirby Hugh Porter; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Kirby Hugh Porter as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
