11100739DWHEREAS, Lynwood Leonard Coiner, Jr., a longtime firefighter, respected businessman, and community leader from Gordonsville, died on June 15, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of Gordonsville, Lynwood “Woody” Coiner was born on December 5, 1928, to loving parents Lynwood Leonard Coiner, Sr., and Claire Meoni Coiner; and
WHEREAS, after graduating from Fork Union Military Academy, Woody Coiner attended the University of Virginia before returning home and going into business with his father at Coiner’s Hatchery; and
WHEREAS, in 1965 Woody Coiner fulfilled his entrepreneurial ambitions when he bought Cowherd Ford and renamed it Coiner Ford; he successfully ran the dealership until his retirement in 1985; and
WHEREAS, as a youth during World War II, Woody Coiner became involved in the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company when many of the town’s men were off fighting; he continued his service for over six decades; and
WHEREAS, committed to the safety of his fellow neighbors and community, Woody Coiner generously gave of his time and talents and rose through the ranks to become fire chief, a position he held for 23 years; and
WHEREAS, Woody Coiner saw many changes in technology and funding over the years as the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company modernized its equipment and involved the community in fundraising efforts; and
WHEREAS, respected and admired by his colleagues, Woody Coiner also helped train a new generation of firefighters to prevent fires and protect the residents of Gordonsville; and
WHEREAS, Woody Coiner shared his experience and expertise as president of the Northern Virginia Fire Chief’s Association, past president and founding member of the Gordonsville Lions Club, and member of the Gordonsville Town Council; and
WHEREAS, Woody Coiner also served as a mentor for many youth in the area as Scoutmaster of the Gordonsville Boy Scout Troop and coach and umpire in the Gordonsville Little League; and
WHEREAS, in April of 2010, Woody Coiner was honored for his longtime service with the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Company with a commemorative pin and award; and
WHEREAS, Woody Coiner leaves behind a sterling legacy of service to his family and community that will be long remembered; and
WHEREAS, Woody Coiner will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his loving wife of 61 years, Phyllis; three children, Lynwood, Robert, and Anne, and their families; and numerous other family members, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a beloved citizen of Gordonsville, Lynwood Leonard Coiner, Jr.; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Lynwood Leonard Coiner, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
