SUMMARY AS PASSED HOUSE:

Extortion; definition of injury to property. Provides that for the purposes of the extortion statute "injury to property" includes the sale, distribution or release of personal identifying information listed in the identity theft statute, unless it is done with the intent to obtain money, property or a pecuniary benefit to which a person reasonably believes he is lawfully entitled.

SUMMARY AS INTRODUCED:

Extortion via use of personal information.  Provides that any person who threatens injury to the personal identity or financial security of another through the release of identifying information set forth in clauses (iii) through (xiii) of subsection C of § 18.2-186.3 (personal information used for identity theft ) is guilty of extortion, a Class 5 felony.
