10103363DWHEREAS, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, health care costs for obesity-related morbidity may soon approach $147 billion per year in the United States; and
WHEREAS, obese children are more likely to become obese adults; and
WHEREAS, obesity prevention requires a healthy environment, including sound nutrition and 60 minutes per day of physical activity; and
WHEREAS, the school environment remains a large part of the growing child's overall environment and daily exercise must be consciously promoted, prioritized, and protected; and
WHEREAS, sound nutrition practices require equal promotion; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the local school divisions be encouraged to promote daily physical activity and reduce childhood obesity; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate transmit a copy of this resolution to the Virginia School Boards Association, requesting that the Executive Director further disseminate copies of this resolution to their respective constituents so that they may be apprised of the sense of the General Assembly of Virginia in this matter.
