SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 79
Celebrating the life of the Reverend James H. Alsop.

WHEREAS, the Reverend James H. Alsop of Bassett, a respected citizen and beloved pastor, died on July 21, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Spotsylvania County, James Alsop was born on February 5, 1924, to Addison Burley Alsop and Clara Payne Alsop, attended Spotsylvania High School, and honorably served his country in the United States Navy as a Seabee during World War II; and

WHEREAS, James Alsop graduated from Bluefield College and Concord College and went to seminary at Southeastern Theological Seminary, where he graduated with a Master of Divinity degree; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to helping others, Pastor James Alsop was the inspirational and caring minister to the congregations of Calvary Baptist Church in Meadow Bridge, West Virginia, Samuel Harris Baptist Mission in Chatham, Zion Baptist Church in Skippers, and Fort Trial Baptist Church in Bassett, where he retired in 1989; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Pastor James Alsop continued to serve his fellow citizens as the pastor emeritus of Mount Olivet Christian Church in Martinsville, and he served as an interim minister for several churches; and

WHEREAS, a tireless volunteer, Pastor James Alsop was a member of the Virginia Baptist Board and served over the years as moderator of the Henry County Baptist Association, president of the Henry County Ministerial Association, chaplain for the Henry County Sheriff’s Department, chairman of the Volunteer Chaplains at the Memorial Hospital of Martinsville and Henry County; and he generously used his exceptional talents to reach out and aid many other civic organizations; and

WHEREAS, James Alsop will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his wife of 63 years, Ann Curtis Alsop; his son, Mike Alsop, and wife, Bobbi; his daughter, Charlotte Krovic, and husband, John; his four grandchildren, Sarah, Michael, Adam, and Brian; his two sisters, Mable Wheat and Betty Lou Massey; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine minister and outstanding Virginian, the Reverend James H. Alsop; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of the Reverend James H. Alsop as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
