SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 78
Celebrating the life of William Michaux Sydnor, Sr.

WHEREAS, William Michaux Sydnor, Sr., of West Augusta, a beloved citizen and a respected leader in the Augusta community, died on August 5, 2009; and

WHEREAS, William “Bill” Sydnor, Sr., was born in Lynchburg on March 12, 1926, the youngest of 12 children of Clement A. and Rochette Raine Sydnor; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sydnor grew up in Lynchburg, attended public schools, graduated from Lynchburg College, and did post graduate work at The College of William and Mary and the University of Virginia; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sydnor served in the United States Merchant Marines and then as a special agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS, after years of devoted service to his country, Bill Sydnor missed the Blue Ridge Mountains and Lynchburg, and he returned to his hometown in the 1950s to work for Lehigh Portland Cement Company as a salesman; and

WHEREAS, a mentor and a role model for young people, Bill Sydnor discovered his true calling was as an educator, first as an excellent teacher and later as the revered principal of Buffalo Gap High School; and

WHEREAS, in 1986, Bill Sydnor retired from the Augusta County Public Schools as the director of Special Education Services; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help his fellow citizens, Bill Sydnor was a loyal member of the Churchville Lions Club for many years and a great supporter of the Ruritan Club, the Churchville and Deerfield Volunteer Fire and Rescue departments, and numerous other local organizations; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sydnor was a faithful member of the Buffalo Gap Presbyterian Church and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, well-known for his colorful stories about his many adventures, his sense of humor, and his fun-loving spirit, Bill Sydnor was the steadfast, loving, and compassionate head of his large and extended family, sharing this role with his first wife of 47 years, the late Jean Watts Sydnor, and then with his current spouse, Jean Davis Sydnor; and

WHEREAS, Bill Sydnor will be greatly missed by his devoted wife of 11 years, Jean Davis Sydnor; his brother A. Kendall Sydnor and sister Rochet S. Blair; his daughter Suzanne S. Bradley and son William M. Sydnor, Jr.; his beloved grandchildren, great-grandson, stepchildren, and step-grandchildren; and his many friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, William Michaux Sydnor, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of William Michaux Sydnor, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
