SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 61 Offered January 13, 2010 Prefiled January 12, 2010 Celebrating the life of Rudolph T. Gordon. ---------- Patron-- Miller, Y.B. ----------

WHEREAS, Rudolph T. Gordon, former dean of the School of Social Science at Norfolk State University, died on December 29, 2008; and

WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, Rudolph Gordon, one of two brothers, was the son of Eugene L. Gordon and Eva B. Midgette Gordon; and

WHEREAS, always an industrious and brilliant scholar, Rudolph Gordon was a 1946 honor graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, attended DePauw University and the University of Pennsylvania, and received a doctorate in government and politics from New York University; and

WHEREAS, Rudolph Gordon continued to learn and study about government and politics throughout his life, including engaging in postdoctoral research in comparative East African Societies; and

WHEREAS, a gifted professor and exemplary administrator, Rudolph Gordon led the School of Social Science at Norfolk State University with great distinction and dedication; and

WHEREAS, Rudolph Gordon generously gave of his time and talents in the community as a 40-year member of the Bachelor Benedict Social Club and a 25-year member of The Virginian-Pilot’s Scholastic Achievement Scholarship Award Committee; and

WHEREAS, Rudolph Gordon lived his faith through his actions and as a member of the Bank Street Baptist Memorial Church, where he was actively involved in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, Rudolph Gordon enjoyed spending time with his family and will be sorely missed by his two sons, Brian and Christopher; his brother, Denny; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding educator and administrator, Rudolph T. Gordon; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Rudolph T. Gordon as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
