Celebrating the life of Harriet Nachman Storm.

WHEREAS, Harriet Nachman Storm of Newport News, a respected citizen and a tireless advocate for people with mental disabilities and their families, died on September 15, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong resident of the Newport News and Hampton area, Harriet Storm was born on September 26, 1942, the daughter of Abe and Isabel Nachman; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Storm received a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary, graduated from the American Press Institute at Columbia University, and completed graduate work in education at The College of William and Mary; and

WHEREAS, after college, Harriet Storm joined the Daily Press as a reporter and editor, and she continued to work as a freelance writer and public relations consultant for many years; and

WHEREAS, an effective and hardworking community leader, Harriet Storm gave her time and expertise to numerous civic organizations, including the Living Interfaith Network of Hampton Roads, Peninsula Legal Aid Society, Hampton Clean City Commission, Hampton’s 400th Anniversary Committee, Hampton Citizens Unity Commission, United Way of the Peninsula, Peninsula Fine Arts Council, Hampton Drug Treatment Court Advisory Board, Virginia Symphony Board and Trustees Council, and National Council of Jewish Women; and

WHEREAS, in 1979, Harriet Storm was appointed to the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board (HNNCSB) by the Hampton City Council and served for 23 years, including two terms as chair; she became HNNCSB’s first emeritus member in 2004; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Storm’s excellent work for HNNCSB and the Association of Community Services Boards established her statewide leadership as a champion for people affected by mental illness and intellectual and developmental disabilities; and

WHEREAS, an excellent state and local leader, Harriet Storm was instrumental in the advancement of mental health legislation and increased funding for families; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Storm received many honors for her numerous contributions to her community, including induction into the Hampton-Newport News Community Services Board Hall of Fame in 1996, the Humanitarian Award from the Peninsula Chapter of the National Conference of Christians and Jews, Who’s Who of American Women, the Amos R. D. Rollins Award by the Peninsula Mental Health Association, and the Daily Press 2002 Citizen of the Year Award; and

WHEREAS, throughout her life, Harriet Storm remained a devoted supporter of her alma mater, The College of William and Mary and an avid Tribe football fan; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Storm was an active member and former president of The College of William and Mary’s Society of the Alumni, a trustee of the Athletic Educational Foundation, and a member of the Board of Visitors; she received the college’s prestigious Alumni Medallion for her long and devoted service and became president of the distinguished Cypher Society; and

WHEREAS, Harriet Storm will be fondly remembered for her tremendous enthusiasm, sensitivity, and compassion and greatly missed by her devoted daughters, Lisa Hogge and Laura Wyatt and their husbands; her four grandchildren; her loving family and friends; and the citizens of Newport News and Hampton; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a passionate community leader and a fine Virginian, Harriet Nachman Storm; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Harriet Nachman Storm as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
