2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters of Virginia is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its founding in 2010; and
WHEREAS, the League of Women Voters (LWV) of Virginia is a nonpartisan political organization that has fought since 1920 to improve our system of government and impact public policies through citizen education and advocacy; and
WHEREAS, the LWV of Virginia evolved from the Equal Suffrage League that met in Richmond in 1909 and fought to secure the vote for thousands of women; and
WHEREAS, the members of the LWV of Virginia believe in representative government and in the individual liberties established in the Constitution of the United States; and
WHEREAS, LWV of Virginia members across the Commonwealth are constantly striving to serve their communities to promote the values and processes of good governance that is open and accessible to the public; and
WHEREAS, the LWV of Virginia works closely with legislators to better serve Virginia communities; and
WHEREAS, the LWV of Virginia has moderated the Women’s Legislative Roundtable since 1981 to provide a forum each week during the General Assembly Session for participation by all Virginians; and
WHEREAS, the LWV of Virginia collaborates with other organizations to achieve mutual goals, increase civic participation, create lasting positive change in the community, and achieve its vision to “Make Democracy Work”; and
WHEREAS, for 90 years, the LWV of Virginia has held the public trust by respectfully bringing elected leaders and the public together through nonpartisan, fair, and civil means and through thoughtfully advancing solutions; and
WHEREAS, the Commonwealth has benefited tremendously from the countless volunteer hours donated by LWV of Virginia members over its 90-year history; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the League of Women Voters of Virginia on the occasion of its 90th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the League of Women Voters of Virginia as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the organization for its commitment to good government and the citizens of Virginia.
