SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 43
Celebrating the life of Colonel, USA Ret., Quintus Cincinnatus Atkinson V.

WHEREAS, Colonel Quintus Cincinnatus Atkinson V, United States Army Retired, of Herndon, died on February 5, 2009; and

WHEREAS, born in the Philippines where his Army officer father was stationed, Quintus Atkinson graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1943; and

WHEREAS, a valiant soldier, Colonel Atkinson proudly continued his family’s tradition of military service while a soldier in Europe during World War II; he received many decorations for his actions, including the Bronze Star Medal; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Colonel Atkinson’s strong leadership skills were utilized as he served as headquarters company commander for General MacArthur’s Far East Command; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Atkinson later served as a liaison to the French Cavalry School in France and was the military liaison at the United States Embassy in Abidjan, Ivory Coast; by 1968, he was chosen to form the office of military liaison in Tunisia; and

WHEREAS, after a long and illustrious military career, Colonel Atkinson retired and moved to the Washington, D.C., area, where he was instrumental in founding the Tank Destroyer Association; and

WHEREAS, mindful of the sacrifices of those who were part of the tank destroyer forces during World War II, Colonel Atkinson worked diligently to help ensure the installation of monuments in Arlington and at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and Fort Hood, Texas; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Atkinson also generously gave of his time and talents in the community through the local Republican Party, St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Herndon, and the Rotary Club of Washington Dulles International Airport; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Atkinson will be remembered for his love of family and country and sorely missed by his loving wife of 41 years, Elizabeth; children Terry and Catherine and their families; and numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Colonel, USA Ret., Quintus Cincinnatus Atkinson V; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Colonel, USA Ret., Quintus Cincinnatus Atkinson V as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
