2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Thomas Boone Nottingham of Hampton, a beloved citizen and a respected community supporter, died on September 11, 2009; and
WHEREAS, a native of Hampton, Thomas “Tom” Nottingham was born on January 18, 1927, the son of Kathleen Overton Nottingham; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham grew up on Grant Street in the City of Hampton, attended Union Elementary School and Phenix High School, and graduated from Hampton Institute, where he mastered mechanical drafting; and
WHEREAS, throughout his youth, Tom Nottingham was an outstanding athlete, a star basketball player, and a tremendous asset to his high school and college championship teams; and
WHEREAS, during college, Tom Nottingham met his wife, Jessie Lively, who became his partner for 51 years; the couple had three wonderful children, Patricia, Thomas, and Dana; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham became a dedicated letter carrier for the United States Post Office, retiring after 30 years of outstanding service serving the neighborhoods of the Wythe community; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham gave his time and talents to many civic organizations, including the Beau Brummell Civic and Social Club, George P. Phenix Alumni Association, and Hampton University Athletic Booster Club; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham joined Wine Street Baptist Church as a child, and he went on to help numerous young people as a Cub Scout troop leader; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham was a great contributor to Wine Street Baptist Church’s relocation to Victoria Boulevard, where the church was renamed Third Baptist Church; he continued to serve as financial secretary, as chairman of the Trustee Board, and as trustee emeritus; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham possessed a joyous spirit and fine sense of humor, and he enjoyed amusing and spending time with his beloved granddaughters and great-grandchild; and
WHEREAS, after retiring, Tom Nottingham took pride in serving his church, his community, and his alma mater Hampton University, and he also became an accomplished artist and painter; and
WHEREAS, Tom Nottingham will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by his devoted family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Hampton; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of a fine Virginian, Thomas Boone Nottingham; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Thomas Boone Nottingham as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
