SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 37
Celebrating the life of Woodley J. Koonce III.

WHEREAS, Woodley J. Koonce III of Chesapeake, a respected citizen and outstanding educator and principal for Chesapeake Public Schools, died on October 25, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Woodley J. “Woody” Koonce III was born in New Bern, North Carolina, the son of Woodley J. Koonce, Jr., and Callie Rose Koonce; and

WHEREAS, Woody Koonce graduated from Great Bridge High School in 1971, attended Ferrum Junior College, earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education and a master’s degree in educational administration from Old Dominion University, and received a doctoral degree in education from George Washington University; and

WHEREAS, Woody Koonce taught for many years in the Chesapeake Public Schools before becoming assistant principal, first at Chittum Elementary School and later at Great Bridge Junior High School; and

WHEREAS, an excellent and hardworking administrator, Woody Koonce served as principal at five Chesapeake Public Schools—Southeastern Elementary School, Crestwood Intermediate School, Crestwood Middle School, Hickory Middle School, and Hickory High School; and

WHEREAS, committed to his community, especially its young people, Woody Koonce generously gave his time and talents to many civic organizations, including officiating at football and wrestling events for the Virginia High School League; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated educator and community leader, Woody Koonce received many honors for his numerous contributions; he was a role model and mentor to his colleagues and students and an inspiration to all who knew him well; and

WHEREAS, Woody Koonce will be fondly remembered as a devoted family man and greatly missed by his loving wife, Vickie B. Koonce; his two daughters, Kristy Hedrick and husband Jason, and Tracy McClung and husband Kenton; his six grandchildren, Jordan, Dylan, Charis, Justin, Emma, and Tristan; and his many other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Woodley J. Koonce III; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Woodley J. Koonce III as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
