Celebrating the life of Joseph V. Gorman, Jr.

WHEREAS, Joseph V. Gorman, Jr., a beloved public servant of Blacksburg, died on December 20, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Joseph “Joe” Gorman was born on August 1, 1929, graduated from E.C. Glass High School, and received a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; and

WHEREAS, Joe Gorman enjoyed a successful career with Hercules Aerospace Company for 40 years and also served as manager of international and development programs at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant; and

WHEREAS, despite work that took him around the world, Joe Gorman found time to serve his fellow citizens through his involvement in local government and various community organizations; and

WHEREAS, Joe Gorman proudly served Montgomery County as a member of the Blacksburg Town Council, the Montgomery County Board of Supervisors, and Public Service Authority; and

WHEREAS, as a member of the board of supervisors, Joe Gorman represented Montgomery County on Virginia’s First Regional Industrial Facility Authority, the New River Valley Planning District Commission, the Montgomery-Floyd Regional Library Board, and the Transportation Safety Commission; and

WHEREAS, in 1994, Joe Gorman played an integral role in the creation and incorporation of the Montgomery Regional Solid Waste Authority, and, after its establishment, served as a member of the Authority; and

WHEREAS, an exceptionally effective and dedicated public servant, Joe Gorman contributed to the successful completion of several schools and participated in negotiations for various water and sewer agreements; and

WHEREAS, Joe Gorman also generously gave of his time and talents in various capacities to numerous organizations in the community, including St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Montgomery County Forestry and Wildlife Association, the Loyal Order of Moose, and the Blacksburg Area Branch Library Building Committee; and

WHEREAS, Joe Gorman will be greatly missed by his loving wife, Jeanette; his other family members and friends; and the citizens of Montgomery County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby mourn the passing of Joseph V. Gorman, Jr., a well-respected member of the Montgomery County community; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Joseph V. Gorman, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
