2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Community Housing Partners, a nonprofit community development corporation based in Christiansburg, received the 2010 Energy Star Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing; and
WHEREAS, in 1975, a group of Virginia Tech faculty and staff members, concerned with improving housing conditions of low-income families in the southwest region of Virginia, formed an organization called Project Home Repair; and
WHEREAS, after gradually expanding its responsibilities and services, Project Home Repair evolved into what is now known as Community Housing Partners, which has served more than 189,500 individuals over 30 years; and
WHEREAS, Community Housing Partners’ services now include sustainable development, architectural design, construction, energy services, homeownership program, housing management, and resident and youth services; and
WHEREAS, employing more than 250 staff members, Community Housing Partners currently owns and manages over 5,000 rental units for individuals and families with incomes between 40 and 60 percent of their area’s median income; and
WHEREAS, Community Housing Partners residents receive green “operations” manuals to learn about the energy efficient features of their homes, how to save money on energy costs, and general information on reducing their carbon footprint; and
WHEREAS, Community Housing Partners created the New River Center for Energy Research and Training, which has trained over 2,900 participants in energy conservation, energy auditing, and weatherization procedures; and
WHEREAS, Community Housing Partners celebrates 30 years of serving the residents of Southwest Virginia by providing environmentally friendly and energy efficient programs; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Community Housing Partners for its receipt of a 2010 Energy Star Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Community Housing Partners as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect for its service to the people of the Commonwealth.
