SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 241
Commending Linda Costanzo.

WHEREAS, Linda Costanzo, an outstanding professor of physiology at Virginia Commonwealth University’s School of Medicine, will retire after a long and distinguished career; and

WHEREAS, a brilliant educator, Dr. Costanzo earned a doctoral degree in pharmacology from The State University of New York and completed postdoctoral training in physiology at Cornell University Medical College; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Costanzo joined the physiology faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) in 1980 and began teaching in 1982; and

WHEREAS, a beloved and respected professor, Dr. Costanzo is known for her innovative teaching methods, enthusiasm, and ability to connect with her students; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Costanzo has influenced new generations of medical professionals not only through her personal interactions with students but also as the author of several best-selling physiology textbooks, which have been translated into seven languages and adopted all over the country by first- and second-year medical students; and

WHEREAS, Dr. Costanzo has received numerous awards and accolades throughout her career, including the prestigious Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society’s Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award, the Arthur C. Guyton Physiology Teacher of the Year award from the American Physiological Society, and the highest awards for teaching from  VCU and the VCU School of Medicine; and

WHEREAS, while Dr. Costanzo will leave Virginia Commonwealth University, her legacy will live on in the lives of the students she has taught throughout her career; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Linda Costanzo for her lifetime of devotion to her profession and commitment to educating the next generation of medical professionals; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Linda Costanzo as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration and respect for her many accomplishments and best wishes in her future endeavors.
