SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 22
Celebrating the life of Jack R. Lilienthal, Sr.

WHEREAS, Jack R. Lilienthal, Sr., a respected citizen and a retired deputy fire chief for the Portsmouth Fire Department, died on June 5, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a lifetime resident of Portsmouth, Jack R. Lilienthal, Sr., was the beloved son of Julius John Lilienthal, Sr., and Shelly Hodges Lilienthal; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lilienthal was married for 49 years to Geraldine Sears Lilienthal, and the loving couple had four children, Joseph L. Sears, Jack R. Lilienthal, Jr., Crystal Sears Jennings, and Steven A. Lilienthal; and

WHEREAS, a dedicated public servant, Jack Lilienthal served the City of Portsmouth for 36 years, 33 years of which were for the Portsmouth Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, a role model and mentor to his fellow firefighters, Jack Lilienthal served the Portsmouth Fire Department as battalion chief of the Training Division and as deputy fire chief until his retirement in 1984; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lilienthal was committed to fire safety and protecting and serving Virginia’s citizens, and he was highly respected by his colleagues and the residents of Portsmouth; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement from the fire department, Jack Lilienthal started his own business, Lilienthal’s General Home Improvement Company; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lilienthal helped organize the Virginia Professional Fire Fighters in 1955, and he was a member of the Portsmouth Local 539, International Association of Fire Fighters, and the Portsmouth Retired Police and Fire Fighters Association; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lilienthal was a loyal freemason for over 50 years and a charter member of the Portsmouth Lodge No. 100 AF&AM, as well as a member of Portsmouth Scottish Rite, Khedive Temple, Portsmouth and Chesapeake Shrine Clubs, and the Khedive Temple Desert Patrol; he was a founding member of the Khedive Fire Brigade; and

WHEREAS, Jack Lilienthal will be fondly remembered as a loving family man and greatly missed by his children and their families, including his 11 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and his many loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the passing of a dedicated public servant and an outstanding Virginian, Jack R. Lilienthal, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Jack R. Lilienthal, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
