Celebrating the life of Captain Thurlow Q. Hutchinson, USNR Ret.

WHEREAS, Captain Thurlow Q. Hutchinson, United States Navy Reserve, Retired, a 48-year resident and admired civic leader from the City of Fairfax, died on February 20, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Omaha, Nebraska, Thurlow Hutchinson was born into a United States Navy family and grew up loving sea stories and military history, even serving as a Sea Scout as a youth at Mare Island Navy Yard; and

WHEREAS, Thurlow Hutchinson attended a different school each year until his graduation from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School; he then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree from Duke University, where he was a member of the NROTC; and

WHEREAS, after college, Thurlow Hutchinson proudly continued his family’s tradition of service in the military through active duty with the United States Navy in the Pacific Basin; he continued to serve as a United States Navy reservist until 1986; and

WHEREAS, an avid student, Thurlow Hutchinson also pursued graduate work at UNC-Chapel Hill, American University, and the United States Department of Agriculture Graduate School to earn a master’s degree; and

WHEREAS, at the end of his military service, Captain Hutchinson moved to the City of Fairfax and went to work as a transportation economist for the United States Department of Agriculture, where he was a respected and valued employee; and

WHEREAS, after years of living in different locations in service to his country, Captain Hutchinson made the City of Fairfax his home and desired to serve his community and fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Captain Hutchinson devoted many hours in various capacities to the Old Lee Hills Civic Association, Kiwanis Club, Friends of Fairfax City, City of Fairfax Democratic Party, and Registrar’s Office of the City of Fairfax Electoral Board; and

WHEREAS, an avid reader, woodworker, and gardener, Captain Hutchinson loved all kinds of music, fine dining, and good conversation; and

WHEREAS, Captain Hutchinson will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and greatly missed by his daughter and son-in-law, Celeste and Bruce Day of Falls Church; his brother, Douglas and his family in Carson City, Nevada; and his many other friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated civic leader and outstanding Virginian, Captain Thurlow Q. Hutchinson, USNR Ret.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Captain Thurlow Q. Hutchinson, USNR Ret., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
