Celebrating the life of Adolphus Gilliam Bradshaw.

WHEREAS, Adolphus Gilliam Bradshaw, a 39-year member of the Planning Commission for James City County, died on November 20, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Adolphus “A.G.” Bradshaw was born on May 24, 1924, in Southampton County to loving parents Mills Edwin and Bessie Whitfield Bradshaw; and

WHEREAS, A.G. Bradshaw graduated from Courtland High School and proudly served in the United States Army during World War II in Europe before marrying Nancy Smith and moving to Norge; and

WHEREAS, a hardworking and industrious young man, A.G. Bradshaw received a bachelor’s degree from The College of William and Mary on the G.I. Bill and went to work for the federal government at Fort Eustis; and

WHEREAS, an exemplary administrator and leader, A.G. Bradshaw rose through the ranks and retired as chief of Civilian Personnel at Fort Monroe; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, A.G. Bradshaw began a new venture, growing and selling Christmas trees; he planted his first trees in 1984 and began selling them in 1992; and

WHEREAS, A.G. Bradshaw generously gave of his time and talents in the community, including 39 years on the Planning Commission for James City County, where he was known for his calm manner and strong character; and

WHEREAS, when A.G. Bradshaw retired from the Planning Commission, the Board of Supervisors honored him for his work in developing the first land use plan, zoning and subdivision ordinances, and the Comprehensive Plan; and

WHEREAS, a member of the Ruritans since 1948, A.G. Bradshaw accumulated 50 years of perfect attendance with the James City Ruritan Club; he was also a member of the Olive Branch Christian Church; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, A.G. Bradshaw enjoyed spending time with his wife and family; his eldest son, Gilliam, preceded him in death; and

WHEREAS, A.G. Bradshaw will be fondly remembered for his thoughtfulness and generosity and sorely missed by his loving wife, Nancy; their surviving children, M. Anderson Bradshaw, Richard Bradshaw, Lawrence Bradshaw, Nancy Sheppard, Philip Bradshaw, and Russell Bradshaw and their families; and his numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a respected public servant and outstanding Virginian, Adolphus Gilliam Bradshaw; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Adolphus Gilliam Bradshaw as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
