SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 192
Celebrating the life of Specialist Stephan Lee Mace.

WHEREAS, United States Army Specialist Stephan L. Mace of Lovettsville, age 21, died heroically in the line of duty on October 3, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Stephan Mace was killed along with seven other soldiers when hundreds of Taliban and other insurgents attacked the small Camp Keating outpost in the Nuristan province of Afghanistan; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Mace had finished guard duty when the insurgent forces attacked; he immediately returned to his post on the front lines and helped his fellow soldiers fire a machine gun; when the machine gun failed, Specialist Mace provided cover fire for his comrades; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Mace’s extraordinary bravery and expertise under heavy fire saved many lives and ultimately allowed his fellow soldiers to hold their ground, counterattack, and retake the combat outpost; and

WHEREAS, a young patriot who felt strongly that it was his duty to serve his country, Stephan Mace attended Loudoun Valley High School and earned his GED before joining the United States Army; and

WHEREAS, Stephan Mace completed basic training at Fort Knox in Kentucky; he then did advanced training and was stationed at Fort Carson in Colorado Springs; and

WHEREAS, a member of the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Specialist Mace deployed to Afghanistan in the spring of 2009; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Mace received many medals and honors for his service in the military, including the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, NATO Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and Combat Action Badge; and

WHEREAS, the Loudoun Times-Mirror named Specialist Mace as its 2009 Citizen of the Year for his sacrifice; and

WHEREAS, an active young man with a good sense of humor, Specialist Mace loved dirt bike riding, spending time outdoors, and playing baseball, basketball, and football; and

WHEREAS, Stephan Mace will be sorely missed by his loving parents, Larry Mace and Vanessa Adelson; brothers, Matthew, Bradley, and Chris; and his numerous other family members, friends, and fellow soldiers; and

WHEREAS, Specialist Stephan Mace’s death is a reminder of the perils faced daily by the thousands of Americans who serve in our armed forces overseas and whose devotion to duty places them in harm’s way; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of a courageous and patriotic Virginian, Specialist Stephan L. Mace; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Specialist Stephan L. Mace as an expression of the high regard in which his memory is held by the members of the General Assembly and the citizens of the Commonwealth.
