SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 179
Celebrating the life of Irving Filmore Truitt, Jr.

WHEREAS, Irving Filmore Truitt, Jr., CPM, GRI, of Norfolk, a respected local realtor, an admired citizen, and a beloved member of the community, died on March 30, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Norfolk, Irving “Bud” Truitt, Jr., was born on May 17, 1923, the son of Annie Nolley Truitt and Irving Filmore Truitt, Sr., graduated from Maury High School, attended the Virginia Military Institute, and served his country in the United States Army during World War II and later in the Navy Reserve; and

WHEREAS, after the war, Bud Truitt graduated from the University of Wisconsin and returned home to work alongside his father in the family’s real estate firm; and

WHEREAS, a lifelong learner with a firm belief in the power of knowledge, Bud Truitt obtained Certified Property Manager (CPM) and Graduate Realtor Institute (GRI) certifications to better serve his clients and to help them realize the American dream of homeownership; and

WHEREAS, always promoting the ideal that realtors represent themselves in a professional manner, Bud Truitt became an esteemed leader in his community and the real estate industry and was a mentor to many realtors in Hampton Roads; he retired as the owner and broker of Century 21 Truitt Realty Company; and

WHEREAS, Bud Truitt generously gave his time and expertise to many civic organizations over the years, including as president and member of the Norfolk Board of Realtors and the Hampton Roads Realtors Association, as a board member of the Norfolk SPCA, and as a member of the Rotary Club of Norfolk; and

WHEREAS, Bud Truitt received many awards and accolades for his contributions to his profession and to his community, such as being named Realtor Emeritus, a distinction given only to realtors with 40 or more years of membership in the National Association of Realtors, and induction into the elite Omega Tau Rho fraternity of the Virginia Association of Realtors; and

WHEREAS, Bud Truitt was a faithful member of the Ghent United Methodist Church and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a role model for others, Bud Truitt achieved his personal goal of exemplary professionalism in his career, leading a life filled with daily examples of leadership, integrity, a positive attitude, encouragement, and hope even during the toughest of times; and

WHEREAS, Bud Truitt will be fondly remembered for his tireless dedication as a realtor and for his devotion to his family and friends; he will be greatly missed by his daughters, Dale Truitt Berrett and her husband, Dean, and Bland T. Walbert DeMao and her husband, Randall; his son, Irving F. “Fil” Truitt III and his wife, Carolyn; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and his many other loving relatives, friends, and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an outstanding professional and fine Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Irving Filmore Truitt, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
