Celebrating the life of Carl F. Emswiller, Jr.

WHEREAS, Carl F. Emswiller, Jr., a retired distinguished community pharmacist from Leesburg, died on December 10, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of Washington, D.C., Carl Emswiller was born on October 21, 1935, to Carl F. and Margaret Emswiller; and

WHEREAS, Carl Emswiller graduated from the Medical College of Virginia (now Virginia Commonwealth University) and began his career in 1962 in Berryville with Eugene White, pioneer of the “Office-Based Practice of Pharmacy”; and

WHEREAS, six years later, Carl Emswiller decided to purchase his own pharmacy and began to employ pharmaceutical care techniques, such as using a patient medication profile and private consultation room; and

WHEREAS, appointed as an associate clinical instructor of pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia, Carl Emswiller not only provided his students with sound pharmaceutical knowledge but also encouraged them to implement new ideas and be leaders in the profession of pharmacy; and

WHEREAS, Carl Emswiller received many awards and accolades throughout his life for his dedication to his profession, including the Remington Honor Medal, the highest honor given in the American pharmacy profession; and

WHEREAS, Carl Emswiller also received the Loudoun County Man of the Year award in 1987, the Outstanding Alumnus award from the Medical College of Virginia-Pharmacy Division in 1991, the Outstanding Pharmacist award from the Virginia Pharmaceutical Association, and the J. Leon Lascoff Memorial award from the American College of Apothecaries; and

WHEREAS, Carl Emswiller generously gave of his time and talents in the community through service on Loudoun Memorial Hospital’s board of trustees, as chair of the Virginia State Board of Pharmacy and the American College of Apothecaries, as a member of the board of directors of the American Pharmacists Foundation, and as president of the Rotary Club of Leesburg; and

WHEREAS, a diligent and caring man, Carl Emswiller built an enviable record of personal service to his customers and influenced the practice of pharmacy throughout a long and remarkable life; and

WHEREAS, Carl Emswiller will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and sorely missed by his devoted wife of 53 years, Jewell Stinson Emswiller; numerous other family members and friends; and the pharmacy community; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated pharmacist and outstanding Virginian, Carl F. Emswiller, Jr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Carl F. Emswiller, Jr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
