2010 SESSION
10105007DWHEREAS, Oriana Robertson Hargrove of Hanover County, a respected citizen and outstanding community supporter and volunteer; died on January 18, 2010; and
WHEREAS, a native of Richmond, Oriana Robertson Hargrove was born on December 29, 1928, and attended Longwood College and Arkansas College; and
WHEREAS, one of Oriana Hargrove’s passionate causes was assisting persons with mental challenges, and she cofounded Friends of Hanover, Inc., which supported the Hanover County Mental Health Association’s Sunrise House by hosting the very successful annual Hanover Gala; and
WHEREAS, because of her own battle with the disease, Oriana Hargrove worked to promote awareness and understanding of those suffering from normal pressure hydrocephalus; and
WHEREAS, Oriana Hargrove generously gave her time and expertise to many civic organizations, including as a board member of the Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities, the Board of Associates for Randolph-Macon College, the Hanover County Mental Health Association, Hanover Tavern, and as a member of the advisory board for Memorial Regional Hospital; and
WHEREAS, Oriana Hargrove was an active member of the Hanover County Republican Women’s Club and the Ashland Garden Club; and
WHEREAS, a devoted preservationist, Oriana Hargrove had an ongoing interest in the restoration of eighteenth century structures and other historic buildings, including her own beautiful 18th-century home, Cool Water; and
WHEREAS, an enthusiastic volunteer and an inspiration to all who knew her well, Oriana Hargrove was a faithful member of the Fork Episcopal Church in Doswell and was active in the church’s many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, Oriana Hargrove will be fondly remembered for her kindness to others and her wonderful sense of humor; and
WHEREAS, a warm, loving, and gracious woman, Oriana Hargrove will be greatly missed by her beloved husband of 57 years, former Delegate Frank D. Hargrove, Sr.; her devoted children and their families, Dale Alderman and her husband, John “Rick” Alderman, Frank Hargrove, Jr., and his wife, Elizabeth, Stewart Hargrove and his wife, Lynn, and Wellesley Hargrove and his wife, Kimberly; her 10 grandchildren, Oriana, Stewart, Sarah, Mark, Frank III, Mollie Sarrah, Madeleine, Graeme, Hannah Jane, and Bailey; her brothers, Stewart Robertson, Bruce Robertson, Dr. William A. Robertson, and their families; her many other relatives and good friends; and the citizens of Hanover County; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding community supporter and volunteer and a fine Virginian, Oriana Robertson Hargrove; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Oriana Robertson Hargrove as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for her memory.
