SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 161
Commending Radford University on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, Radford University was chartered March 10, 1910, by the Commonwealth of Virginia as the State Normal and Industrial School for Women at Radford to prepare teachers who could educate the citizens of an emerging nation; and

WHEREAS, over the decades, Radford University has grown substantially in scope and quality, and was renamed the Radford State Teachers College in 1924 and the Women’s Division of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI) in 1944; it discontinued its relationship with VPI and became Radford College in 1964, and ultimately was named Radford University in 1979; and

WHEREAS, since its founding the university has provided thousands of citizens with the benefits of a Radford education; those citizens have gone on to make meaningful and lasting contributions to society through their service in education, the sciences, business, health and human services, government, the arts and humanities, and other endeavors; and

WHEREAS, Radford University today is a productive and vital academic community with thousands of students who approach university life with an enthusiasm for learning and personal development; a brilliant faculty that is committed to the highest ideals of academic scholarship and the advancement of society; and devoted administrators and staff members who strive to foster an environment that supports the noble work of the university; and

WHEREAS, the occasion of an institution’s centennial is an appropriate time for faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends to unite to recognize past achievements with pride and to consider ways in which they might collaborate to create an even more successful university during the century ahead; and

WHEREAS, the university has embraced a culture of service and created a “Centennial Service Challenge” that invites every member of the campus and extended university community to engage in and document community service in honor of the centennial; and

WHEREAS, Radford University will observe a Centennial Charter Day Celebration on March 24, 2010, and present numerous other academic programs and arts and cultural events throughout the year to commemorate the event; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Radford University on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Radford University President Penelope Kyle as an expression of the General Assembly’s recognition and congratulations to the students, faculty, staff, and alumni of Radford University on this momentous occasion and acknowledgment of the important contributions Radford University has made to the Commonwealth of Virginia during its first 100 years of service.
