Commending Khalil Hassan.

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan of Madison County, a local leader and conservationist, is recognized in 2010 for his many contributions to preserve the natural resources and environment in his community; and

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan was an experienced and knowledgeable fire and arson investigator for the District of Columbia Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department from 1967 to 1991; and

WHEREAS, after his retirement, Khalil Hassan moved to Madison County in 1992 and soon became involved in his new community; and

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan is a 2001 alumnus of the Virginia Natural Resources Leadership Institute and has been a certified master gardener since 2003; and

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan began volunteering for several tree planting projects in the Fredericksburg area, as well as in the surrounding Counties of Madison, Orange, and Culpeper; and

WHEREAS, an outdoor enthusiast and conservationist, Khalil Hassan became involved in water quality monitoring on the Robinson River and in riparian buffer projects in Madison County; and

WHEREAS, over the years, Khalil Hassan has generously given his time and expertise to numerous civic and ecological organizations, including as a member of the Madison County Planning Commission and the Advisory Board of the Blue Ridge Foothills Conservancy; as president of Rural Madison, a local nonprofit that focuses on land use issues; as president of the Piedmont Environmental Council; and as a board member of RappFLOW; and

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan is a volunteer for the Madison Farm 2 Table Community Garden, working to get more local produce into public schools and managing the community garden; he is also a full-time market farmer; and

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan contributed to the Soil and Water Conservation District’s “Meaningful Watershed Experience” for the Greene County Middle School from 2004 to 2008; and

WHEREAS, Khalil Hassan is a role model and mentor, especially for young people, and he is a volunteer for the Breakfast Buddy program at Madison Primary School; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Khalil Hassan for his many contributions to his community and his fellow citizens; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Khalil Hassan as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation for his many accomplishments and gratitude for his stewardship of the environment.
