SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 152
Commending the Phoebus High School football team.

WHEREAS, the Phoebus High School football team defeated Stone Bridge High School in the hard-fought 15–10 state championship game to take home the Group AAA, Division 5 title before an enthusiastic crowd at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville; and

WHEREAS, the win marked the second year in a row that the powerhouse Phoebus High School Phantoms won the state championship; the Phantoms have won three of the last four state championship games, five titles this decade, and 30 wins overall; and

WHEREAS, Phoebus High School became only the second program in Virginia High School League history to win five championships in one decade; and

WHEREAS, tailback Colby Goodwyn started the Phantoms off with a touchdown in the first five minutes of the game, and at the start of the third quarter took the kickoff at the Phantoms’ one-yard line to run 99 yards to score the second touchdown of the game; and

WHEREAS, while the Stone Bridge High School Bulldogs played an excellent game, the Phantoms’ outstanding defense held the Bulldogs to just one touchdown late in the third quarter; and

WHEREAS, the state championship win marked the end of a remarkable season and months of hard work and training on the part of the players and coaching staff; and

WHEREAS, the triumphant performance of the Phantoms is a tribute to the talent, dedication, and perseverance of the players; the leadership of Head Coach Stan Sexton and his hardworking staff; and the tremendous support of the parents, students, and faculty of Phoebus High School; and

WHEREAS, the Phantoms finished the season with a perfect 15–0 record and look forward to playing championship football again next year; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Phoebus High School football team for its Group AAA, Division 5 championship win; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Head Coach Stan Sexton as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding performance.
