Commending the Riverside Elementary School ThinkQuest competition team.

WHEREAS, the Riverside Elementary School ThinkQuest competition team won second place in the Oracle Corporation’s ThinkQuest narrative competition; and

WHEREAS, the mission of ThinkQuest is to “inspire students globally to think, connect, create and share—using technology to help them dissolve boundaries, fulfill their potential, and create a better society”; and

WHEREAS, the ThinkQuest competition, sponsored by the Oracle Education Foundation, includes a website competition in which student teams create an educational website and a narrative competition in which student teams can publish their ideas on topics of global importance; and

WHEREAS, teams have four months to research their topics and submit their entries; first and second place winners are selected for three age divisions; and

WHEREAS, twelve hundred teams from 26 countries participated in the competition in 2009; teams from Brazil, India, Puerto Rico, Singapore, South Africa, and the United States won; and

WHEREAS, the Riverside Elementary School team, Team “Gummy Bears,” was led by teachers Chrissy Stolen and Kim Pruden and included fourth graders Alice Stodghill, Miles McAllister, Xavier Oman, Corbin Hawk, Aliyah Newman, and Ryan Richardson; and

WHEREAS, the Riverside Elementary School team’s project was entitled “What Makes a Good World Citizen” and dealt with how humans can have a positive impact on the environment; ThinkQuest provided a website where people can view the award-winning submission; and

WHEREAS, the remarkable Riverside Elementary School team received a laptop and trip to San Francisco, California, for a ThinkQuest Live conference; and

WHEREAS, the Riverside Elementary School ThinkQuest competition team demonstrated great team effort, creative thinking, and advanced writing and research skills while also providing a resource for others; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Riverside Elementary School ThinkQuest competition team for its second place finish; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Riverside Elementary School ThinkQuest competition team as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the team’s outstanding work.
