SENATE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 129 Offered January 22, 2010 Commending Howard Kempter. ----------

WHEREAS, Howard Kempter, a respected and admired citizen of Falls Church, is recognized in 2010 for his outstanding service to his community and fellow citizens; and

WHEREAS, Howard Kempter was born on January 5, 1910; a native of Sabula, Iowa, he has lived most of his adult life in his adopted home of Virginia and is a longtime resident of Northern Virginia; and

WHEREAS, after passing a civil service test, Howard Kempter moved to Washington, D.C., in 1935 so he could take a job with the federal government working first for the United States Department of War and then for the Department of the Army at the Pentagon; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Howard Kempter married his loving wife, LaVerna C. Dahnk, on September 27, 1938, and the loving couple have two devoted sons, William H. Kempter and Joseph P. Kempter, and a large, loving family, including a host of beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren; and

WHEREAS, after retiring from a 34-year career of distinguished government service, Howard Kempter worked for nine years at Lord & Taylor; and

WHEREAS, always ready to help his neighbors in need, Howard Kempter has been very involved in his church, St. Anthony of Padua, where he has served as a Eucharistic minister, as well as in his community of Falls Church, where he has been a local leader and active volunteer; and

WHEREAS, Howard Kempter has especially enjoyed mentoring young people through his affiliation with the Northern Virginia Junior Catholic Youth Organization at Saint James Catholic School in Falls Church; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend a fine Virginia gentleman, Howard Kempter, on the occasion of his 100th birthday, for his outstanding service to his community and his fellow citizens; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Howard Kempter as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his many accomplishments.
