2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Historic Hilton Village, a well-known walkable community in Newport News, is commended for being named one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2009 by the American Planning Association’s (APA) Great Places in America program; and
WHEREAS, through Great Places in America, the APA recognizes unique and authentic characteristics found in three essential components of all communities–streets, neighborhoods, and public spaces; and
WHEREAS, the Great Places in America program recognizes neighborhoods that exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value; and
WHEREAS, APA Great Places in America are defined by many characteristics, including architectural features, accessibility, functionality, and community involvement; and
WHEREAS, the American Planning Association singled out Historic Hilton Village as an iconic example of timeless neighborhood planning concepts; and
WHEREAS, designed and planned in 1918 by renowned British urban planner Sir Ebenezer Howard, Historic Hilton Village was the first of approximately 100 federally financed and constructed housing projects during World War I; and
WHEREAS, residents of Historic Hilton Village have many amenities and commercial areas within easy walking or biking distance, which make for an enjoyable and relaxing neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, Warwick Boulevard, the commercial corridor, includes an Art Deco performing arts theater, restaurants, an art gallery, and antique, jewelry, and gift shops; the corridor draws both residents and those from surrounding areas; and
WHEREAS, Historic Hilton Village provides a welcoming and safe haven for its residents and a pleasurable outing for visitors; and
WHEREAS, the excellent plans and character of Historic Hilton Village have brought the neighborhood and Newport News national recognition; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend Historic Hilton Village for being named one of the 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2009 by the American Planning Association’s (APA) Great Places in America program; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Historic Hilton Village as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration.
