Celebrating the life of Anargyros Lolos.

WHEREAS, Anargyros Lolos of Williamsburg, a former restaurateur and community servant, died on March 24, 2009; and

WHEREAS, a native of the small town of Karpenisi, Greece, Anargyros (Artie) Lolos decided as a young man to immigrate to America; and

WHEREAS, entrepreneurial and hardworking, Artie Lolos took his first job as a hot dog cart worker in New York City and eventually opened his own coffee shop in the Bronx; both jobs gave him valuable work experience in the food service industry; and

WHEREAS, after moving to Newport News with his mother and sister, Artie Lolos owned and operated the iconic Steve’s Steak House for almost two decades; and

WHEREAS, Artie Lolos was not only a savvy businessman but also a compassionate and generous supporter of individuals in the community who were in need; he used his business to help feed the homeless and others who were having hard times; and

WHEREAS, actively involved with numerous charitable organizations, Artie Lolos also worked with An Achievable Dream Academy, a partnership of the Newport News Public Schools, the City of Newport News, and the local business community that helps students at risk of failure in school due to socioeconomic factors; and

WHEREAS, many organizations and institutions recognized Artie Lolos for his commitment and dedication to helping others; the Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities presented him with its Peninsula Chapter Humanitarian Award; and

WHEREAS, Artie Lolos lived his faith through his actions and as a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Church and was actively involved in the church’s many missions in the community; and

WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Artie Lolos will be sorely missed by his loving wife, Toni; their son, Gus, and his family; daughter, Marcella, and her family; and numerous friends and admirers; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of Anargyros Lolos, a compassionate and dedicated businessman and outstanding Virginian; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Artie Lolos as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
