2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Doorways for Women and Families, Arlington’s outstanding provider and champion for victims of homelessness, violence, and abuse for over 30 years, was honored as the recipient of The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement; and
WHEREAS, the Center for Nonprofit Advancement is an organization that works to strengthen and promote nonprofit organizations in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., area; and
WHEREAS, Doorways for Women and Families, commonly known as “Doorways,” received a $10,000 cash grant and a scholarship for one person to attend the Georgetown University Center for Public and Nonprofit Leadership’s nonprofit management executive certificate program; and
WHEREAS, Doorways was founded in 1978, when a small group of concerned citizens began to help people in need, who were seeking temporary shelter, by putting them up for a night in a motel room; and
WHEREAS, Doorways was originally called the Arlington Community Temporary Shelter and its first home was in a house rented from St. George’s Episcopal Church for $100 per month; and
WHEREAS, through interfaith partnerships and the help of generous supporters and volunteers, Doorways became Arlington’s first emergency shelter and safe house; and
WHEREAS, over the years, Doorways has purchased two homes for permanent shelters, developed a system of support rental housing, and implemented outstanding programs to help individuals and families transition back into their communities; and
WHEREAS, Executive Director Linda Dunphy, the board of directors headed by President Nicholas Evans, and the dedicated staff, volunteers, and supporters of Doorways work hard every day to provide a lifesaving continuum of care, hope and safety for the women and children who experience the crises of domestic violence or homelessness; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the Senate, the House of Delegates concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate Doorways for Women and Families as the winner of The Washington Post Award for Excellence in Nonprofit Management by the Center for Nonprofit Advancement; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the Senate prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Doorways for Women and Families as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the nonprofit organization for its longtime commitment to victims of homelessness, violence, and abuse in the Commonwealth.
