HOUSE RESOLUTION NO. 35 Offered March 10, 2010 Commending the Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School Blue Crab Bowl team. ----------

WHEREAS, the Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School Blue Crab Bowl team from Virginia Beach won the 13th Annual Virginia Regional Competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl held March 5 - 6 at Old Dominion University; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Crab Bowl showcases the Commonwealth’s most talented science students as they display their mastery of oceanic knowledge; and

WHEREAS, the team from Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School has won the Virginia Regional Competition of the Blue Crab Bowl for three consecutive years in the 16-team competition; and

WHEREAS, the team members representing Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School in the competition included Christine Chesley, captain; Jack Hall; Kyle Bankes; Mary Chang; and Nathan Taylor; and

WHEREAS, each team member has one or more areas of oceanography and marine policy to master, including the geological, chemical, biological, and physical aspects of the oceans, as well as the social and historical aspects and the law and marine policy; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Crab Bowl is a cooperative effort of the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, The College of William & Mary; Virginia Sea Grant; and Old Dominion University’s Department of Ocean, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences and Center for Coastal Physical Oceanography; and

WHEREAS, more than 2,000 students from nearly 400 high schools from around the country participated in this 13th annual event; and

WHEREAS, the Blue Crab Bowl team from Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School advances to the national finals in St. Petersburg, Florida, in late April; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, That the Blue Crab Bowl team from Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School hereby be commended; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Bill Dunn, Blue Crab Bowl Team Coach, as an expression of the House of Delegates’ congratulations on the team’s outstanding performance in this national scholastic competition.
