10102131DWHEREAS, John H. Campbell, the director at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center’s Wallops Flight Facility and Director of Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects, is commended for his service to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport; and
WHEREAS, a brilliant and dedicated student, John Campbell graduated from West Geauga High School in Chesterland, Ohio; received a bachelor’s degree in physics from Carnegie-Mellon University; and a master’s degree and doctorate in physics from Purdue University; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell was a postdoctoral appointee at Argonne National Laboratory, where he performed high-energy particle experiments using the laboratory’s particle accelerator before moving to Singer-Kearfott Co. in New Jersey, where he was responsible for the development of aircraft avionics software; and
WHEREAS, for the next decade, Dr. Campbell worked at the IBM Federal Systems Division in Maryland, where he worked on flight and ground software for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST); and
WHEREAS, beginning as a staff programmer at IBM, Dr. Campbell was recognized for his strong leadership and managerial skills and was promoted to project manager; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell began his career with NASA in 1987 at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, as the Systems Engineering Manager for the Flight Software Systems Branch; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Campbell moved to the HST Project as the Deputy Project Manager in 1988 and became the Deputy Associate Director of Flight Projects for HST in 1990; and
WHEREAS, during the First Hubble Servicing Mission, Dr. Campbell was responsible for all operations at Goddard; he later became the Associate Director of Flight Projects for HST; and
WHEREAS, in 2000 Dr. Campbell became the Director of Flight Programs and Projects, responsible for all major flight programs and flight projects at the Goddard Space Flight Center; and
WHEREAS, in 2002 Dr. Campbell became the Director of Suborbital and Special Orbital Projects; he is currently responsible for the Goddard Space Flight Center’s suborbital and low-cost orbital flight projects; and
WHEREAS, recognized for his extraordinary work and dedication to his profession and NASA, Dr. Campbell received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal in 1988, the NASA Exceptional Achievement Medal in 1991, and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal in 1994; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend John H. Campbell for his exemplary service to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John H. Campbell as an expression of the General Assembly’s admiration for his many achievements and gratitude for his years of service to the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
