HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 59 Celebrating the life of Leo T. Griffin, Sr.

WHEREAS, Leo T. Griffin, Sr., of Richmond, an admired citizen and respected community supporter, died on December 18, 2009; and

WHEREAS, Leo Griffin served his country with distinction in the United States Navy during World War II; he remained steadfastly devoted to his community, the Commonwealth, and his fellow citizens throughout his life; and

WHEREAS, Leo Griffin was married to the late Geraldine “Jeannie” Lacy Griffin, and the couple had two wonderful sons; and

WHEREAS, after his military duty, Leo Griffin served as the exemplary vice president of Union Electric Company in Richmond from 1946 to 1956; and

WHEREAS, dedicated to his profession, Leo Griffin helped establish the Richmond Electricians Joint Apprenticeship Committee and served as the first chairman; and

WHEREAS, an excellent instructor and mentor to young tradesmen, Leo Griffin taught National Electrical Code and mathematics at the Electricians’ Apprenticeship School, and was an associate member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors; and

WHEREAS, in 1956 Leo Griffin founded his own consulting and electrical engineering firm and became a valuable contributor to the designs of St. Mary's Hospital, the Blue Cross Building, Richmond City Hall, and the Commonwealth’s Monroe Building; and

WHEREAS, possessing a strong work ethic, Leo Griffin worked many years for Dominion Virginia Power in the Nuclear Engineering Services Department until his retirement in July 2000; and

WHEREAS, Leo Griffin will be fondly remembered for his professionalism and for his love of life and family and will be greatly missed by his two sons, Leo T. Griffin, Jr., and wife, Peggy, and John Patrick Griffin and wife, Kathy; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter; and a host of other loving family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Leo T. Griffin, Sr.; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Leo T. Griffin, Sr., as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
