Commending the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad.

WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad is celebrating its historic 50th anniversary in 2010; and

WHEREAS, on October 1, 1960, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad was founded by Nansemond County Fire Chief Frank Gayle and a group of concerned citizens, who saw the need for an emergency service provider to transport people in need of medical attention; and

WHEREAS, before the establishment of the rescue squad, emergency calls were directed to either the auto body shop or the funeral home, where the two ambulances were garaged; and

WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad’s first team was comprised of 60 able volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad’s first home was on West Washington Street where Carter's Furniture is currently located and its first rescue vehicle was a converted truck donated by the town's Chevrolet dealer; and

WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad would move twice more before settling in its current location on Market Street in 1965; and

WHEREAS, early on, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad covered a service area from Corapeake, North Carolina, to as far north as Ivor; and

WHEREAS, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad’s service area decreased as it helped start rescue squads in Ivor, Windsor, Smithfield, and Bennett's Creek; and

WHEREAS, today, the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad maintains a fleet of 11 state-of-the-art ambulances and quick response vehicles; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Nansemond-Suffolk Volunteer Rescue Squad as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude to the squad for its many accomplishments and best wishes for a joyful anniversary celebration.
