HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 484
Commending the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center on the occasion of its 50th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center celebrates 50 years of serving 4-H youth and families in Southwest Virginia in 2010; and

WHEREAS, in 1958 Washington County, Virginia, donated the former county “poor farm” for the establishment of the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center, and, within a few years, the educational facility was completed in Abingdon; and

WHEREAS, since 1960, the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center has served over 80,000 campers and another 600,000 individuals representing businesses, organizations, and family groups through a wide variety of programs; and

WHEREAS, the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center provides the residents of 13 counties in Southwest Virginia with a facility that offers a diverse experiential learning program for 4-H youth and families through hands-on camps, workshops, and seminars regarding life skills, natural resource conservation, and citizenship; and

WHEREAS, as the economy of Southwest Virginia changes, the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center has responded with expanded programming to assist colleges and universities, Job Corps Centers, and public schools in providing additional career training and exploration; and

WHEREAS, the curriculum at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center is research based and correlates with Virginia’s Standards of Learning; the Center also provides adult educational opportunities through Elderhostel International; and

WHEREAS, the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center will celebrate its 50th anniversary of developing today’s youth for the world of tomorrow on August 7, 2010; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center on the occasion of its 50th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the organization’s commitment to providing educational opportunities to the citizens of Southwest Virginia for 50 years and best wishes for continued success in the future.
