HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 482
Celebrating the life of John Gruber Fox.

WHEREAS, John Gruber Fox of Annandale, a leading citizen and community volunteer, died on March 2, 2010; and

WHEREAS, a native of Pennsylvania, John Fox was born on November 11, 1919, and moved with his family in 1921 to Arlington, where he attended Washington and Lee High School; and

WHEREAS, John Fox began his career with the Washington Gas Light Co. as a dispatcher in 1940 before he entered military service with the 117th Combat Engineers, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant; and

WHEREAS, John Fox proudly served his country in the Philippines, where he was part of an elite unit that received a presidential citation for its speed in constructing and repairing bridges under enemy fire; and

WHEREAS, after his service, John Fox returned to Arlington and resumed his career with Washington Gas Light Co. and married the love of his life, the late Ruth Posey; and

WHEREAS, John Fox’s career with Washington Gas Light Co. spanned 49 years; he worked his way up the ranks and spent the last 20 years of his career as director of Northern Virginia Government Relations; and

WHEREAS, as a lobbyist, John Fox spent much time in Richmond during the General Assembly sessions, and one evening while in town entered a local dance contest with Delegate Vivian Watts; the dancing duo placed second; and

WHEREAS, John Fox was also a well-known figure in the community as a life member of 65 years with the Annandale Volunteer Fire Department, founding president of the Annandale Rotary Club, member of the board of directors of the Annandale Chamber of Commerce, and member of the American Legion; and

WHEREAS, a baseball enthusiast, John Fox managed Little League and Babe Ruth teams for over 30 years and was instrumental in forming the Senior Babe Ruth League for players 16 to 18 years of age; and

WHEREAS, John Fox leaves behind a rich legacy of love and service to his community and country and will be greatly missed by his caring children, Chris, Craig, Cathy, and Ken and their families, and his numerous other family members and friends; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly note with great sadness the loss of a dedicated community leader and outstanding Virginian, John Gruber Fox; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of John Gruber Fox as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
