WHEREAS, English Construction Company, Inc., of Altavista, a third-generation family-owned business, celebrated 100 years of providing quality general construction in 2009; and
WHEREAS, English Construction Company, Inc., was founded as the W.B. English Lumber Company, a lumber and building supply company, in 1909 by W.B. English; and
WHEREAS, sons Curtis and E.R. (Red) English took over management of the company after graduating from Virginia Tech in the early 1930s, and in the 1940s, Red English took over the lumber supply business while Curtis led the construction company; and
WHEREAS, English Construction Company, Inc., is now a complete home improvement center, with plumbing and electrical parts, hardware, carpet, flooring, and paint, dedicated to providing outstanding customer service; and
WHEREAS, over the years, English Construction Company, Inc., has expanded and now includes English Development, a commercial land development company; several land and holding companies; and the English Foundation, which gives scholarships to local students and contributes to organizations in the community, such as Hunters for the Hungry and the Salvation Army; and
WHEREAS, English Construction Company, Inc., has developed expertise in such areas as building bridges, power plants, factories, and monumental structures, and preserving historic structures during the course of its history and now works in eight states throughout the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast; and
WHEREAS, for the past century, English Construction Company, Inc., has retained its committment to the values of its founder: integrity, service, and quality; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend English Construction Company, Inc., on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to English Construction Company, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s congratulations and admiration for the company’s century of service to the community.
