Commending Kevin Michaels.

WHEREAS, Kevin Michaels, a former award-winning wrestler at the University of Virginia and longtime wrestling coach at Kellam High School in Virginia Beach, is commended for his induction into the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame; and

WHEREAS, Kevin Michaels began his wrestling career in the seventh grade, and as a member of the University of Virginia wrestling team from 1969 to 1973 recorded top-three finishes in four consecutive ACC tournaments, winning championships in 1971, 1972, and 1973; and

WHEREAS, Kevin Michaels is the only three-time ACC champion to win in three descending weight classes, and was named the tournament Most Outstanding Wrestler in his junior year; and

WHEREAS, Kevin Michaels was a four-time finalist in the Virginia State Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournament, which he won twice; he also won the Wilkes Open Wrestling Tournament as a sophomore and placed third as a junior; and

WHEREAS, Kevin Michaels served as captain of the wrestling team at the University of Virginia for two years and was voted the Outstanding Athlete at the University in 1973; and

WHEREAS, while serving as the head wrestling coach at Kellam High School for 20 years, Kevin Michaels was known for his commitment to excellence; he coached several state champions and place winners, including one junior national champion and one wrestler who went on to become an NCAA Division I All-American; and

WHEREAS, since his retirement, Kevin Michaels has been a volunteer assistant wrestling coach at Norfolk Academy; he has also served as a referee with the Southeast Wrestling Official Association; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend Kevin Michaels on his induction into the Virginia Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to Kevin Michaels as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his remarkable accomplishments and contributions to high school wrestling in the Commonwealth.
