2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, Oliver James Tate of Staunton, an admired citizen and respected community leader, died on July 30, 2009; and
WHEREAS, born on December 7, 1921, Oliver Tate honorably served his country in the United States Army during World War II; and
WHEREAS, an American patriot, Oliver Tate received the American Theatre Service Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal for his valiant service; and
WHEREAS, Oliver Tate was married to his one and only love, Mary Emigene Tate, and the couple had seven wonderful children, two who were adopted, and were happily married for over 60 years; and
WHEREAS, possessing a strong work ethic, Oliver Tate was the compassionate and diligent caretaker of the Fairview Cemetery and served as the longtime chairman of the cemetery board; and
WHEREAS, Oliver Tate was a proud member of the Thomas Field Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7815 in Staunton and served as commander of the post from 1993 to 2008; and
WHEREAS, Oliver Tate was a faithful member and leader of Augusta Street United Methodist Church in Staunton and was active in the church's many missions in the community; and
WHEREAS, the loving patriarch of a large, happy family, Oliver Tate was an encouraging mentor and tireless supporter of his children, grandchildren, and everyone who knew him well; and
WHEREAS, a devoted family man, Oliver Tate will be fondly remembered for his kind and generous nature and will be greatly missed by his loving wife and family, his numerous friends and admirers, and the citizens of Staunton; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly mourn the passing of an outstanding Virginian, Oliver James Tate; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the family of Oliver James Tate as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect for his memory.
