Commending the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department's Annual Firemen's Carnival on the occasion of its 75th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department was established in 1932 with 12 charter members to better protect the property and citizens of the Town of Kilmarnock; and

WHEREAS, in 1935 the members of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department decided to hold a carnival to raise funds for the Department; and

WHEREAS, the first Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department carnival was held on a half-acre vacant lot and provided an opportunity for the residents of Kilmarnock to gather and enjoy food and games with proceeds going toward equipping the newly formed volunteer fire department; and

WHEREAS, today the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department has grown to 40 regular members, including four family members of the original charter members, and 11 junior members and serves a 30-mile radius; and

WHEREAS, throughout the years, the members of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department have served the residents of the Town of Kilmarnock with great dedication and have responded to over 10,000 calls since the Department’s inception; and

WHEREAS, as the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department has grown, the Annual Firemen’s Carnival has expanded as well; the Carnival moved to a larger location 57 years ago and now occupies a five-acre spot that allows more members of the community to attend; and

WHEREAS, the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual Firemen’s Carnival is now the longest consecutively run firemen’s carnival in the Commonwealth and the profits, which are now 10 percent of the Department’s budget, have allowed the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department to expand its services and efficiency through better equipment and regular training for its members; and

WHEREAS, the 75th Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual Firemen’s Carnival will be held July 29, 2010, through August 7, 2010, on the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department’s carnival grounds on Waverly Avenue and will again offer games, rides, food, and a variety of raffle prizes for the community to enjoy; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department’s Annual Firemen’s Carnival on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department Carnival Committee as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation and acknowledgment of the Carnival’s contributions to the Department and the residents of Kilmarnock.
