Commending the Town of Amherst on the occasion of its 100th anniversary.

WHEREAS, the proud citizens of the Town of Amherst will celebrate their historic community’s 100th anniversary in 2010; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst was named for Lord Jeffery Amherst, a British Major General who was the hero of the Battle of Ticonderoga, and who later became Governor-in-Chief of the Colony of Virginia from 1763 to 1768; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst began as a stage station on the Charlottesville-Lynchburg Road and was originally known as “Five Oaks”; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst became the county seat of Amherst County in 1807; and

WHEREAS, incorporated on April 15, 1910, the Town of Amherst continues to fulfill the incorporation intent of its forefathers by providing public safety, law, and order for its residents; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst is ably led by current Town Council members Richard Wydner, Jr.; Bobby Joe Bondurant; J. Paul Kilgore, Jr.; Haney Mottley; Harold Swisher; and Mayor Jacob Parker Bailey; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst continues to provide a friendly atmosphere where churches of many denominations work together in a spirit of cooperation to provide for the common good; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst is the site of the oldest continuously functioning traffic circle in the Commonwealth, which has brought the Town much recognition for the beauty of its fountain and well-maintained seasonal plantings; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst is graced with unsurpassed natural beauty and panoramic views of the Blue Ridge Mountains; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst is home to the Amherst Milling Company, one of Virginia’s oldest operating gristmills, established in 1813 and currently a producer of flour, cornmeal, and livestock feeds; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst has, since 1879, benefited from the publication of the Amherst New Era-Progress newspaper and its forerunners in their efforts to create an informed citizenry and enhance a spirit of community; and

WHEREAS, the Town of Amherst, having benefited for many years from the rail and freight activity at its local train depot, continues to appreciate its rail history reminders from the daily whistles still sounding through the Town; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Town of Amherst on the occasion of its 100th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Town of Amherst as an expression of the General Assembly’s best wishes for a successful centennial celebration.
