2010 SESSION
WHEREAS, John C. Hamlin, the former mayor of Danville and member of the Danville City Council, was honored as Danville Citizen of the Year in 2009 by the Kiwanis Club; and
WHEREAS, John Hamlin is the 78th person to be named Danville Citizen of the Year, an award presented annually by the local Kiwanis Club to an outstanding recipient who has made unselfish contributions to the welfare of the community and its citizens; and
WHEREAS, John Hamlin was born in Danville on November 4, 1946, the son of John and Lois Hamlin, and completed a bachelor’s degree at Randolph-Macon College in 1970; and
WHEREAS, John Hamlin began his service to the community in the early 1980s as a conscientious employee of the Danville Distributing Company; he was chosen as the ideal person to help build partnerships between the company and the community; and
WHEREAS, over the years, John Hamlin has served as a board member and in leadership positions for numerous civic organizations, including the Retail Merchants Association of Danville, Danville Area Chamber of Commerce, Danville Planning Commission, Danville Development Council, Danville Redevelopment and Housing Authority, Virginia Beer Wholesalers Association, and the Virginia Municipal League; and
WHEREAS, John Hamlin was elected to four terms as a council member and served as an outstanding and hard-working mayor of the City of Danville for two 2-year terms, retiring in 2008 after 22 years of outstanding service to his community; and
WHEREAS, John Hamlin has received numerous awards and accolades over the years for his exemplary service to his community and he is particularly proud of being chosen Danville Citizen of the Year; he received a plaque and an engraved vase from the Kiwanis Club members; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate John C. Hamlin as Danville Citizen of the Year by the Kiwanis Club; and, be it
RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to John C. Hamlin as an expression of the General Assembly’s appreciation of his many achievements.
