HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 41
Commending the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc., on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of its founding.

WHEREAS, in 2010 the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc., celebrates the 75th anniversary of its founding; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads was formed on February 12, 1935, by Julian Stanley Wise in the Green Room of the Hotel Roanoke; he had previously formed the first volunteer life saving crew in the United States, the Roanoke Life Saving Crew, in May 1928 in Roanoke; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads is made up of more than 300 emergency medical services agencies throughout the Commonwealth, consisting of over 18,000 dedicated volunteers; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads membership includes the auxiliaries and junior squads that assist their local agencies to improve service to communities and the Commonwealth; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads is a leader in training, developing, and implementing courses that are now considered a statewide requirement and a model for national and international training; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads provides a multitude of statewide training opportunities, including the Annual Rescue College that has been held for 35 years; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads works in conjunction with other state agencies and those of adjoining states to improve and advance training in all areas of emergency medical services; and

WHEREAS, the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads members serve on numerous boards and commissions to enhance the emergency medical system in the Commonwealth; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly commend and congratulate the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc., on the occasion of its 75th anniversary; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Virginia Association of Volunteer Rescue Squads, Inc., as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for the organization’s commitment to providing emergency medical services to the citizens of the Commonwealth for 75 years.
