HOUSE JOINT RESOLUTION NO. 402
Commending the George C. Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America.

WHEREAS, the George C. Marshall Chapter (Chapter) was formed in 2006 at the Virginia Military Institute and named for an alumnus, General George C. Marshall, to serve as an independent, nonprofit, politically nonpartisan chapter of the Virginia Council of Chapters of the Military Officers Association of America (Association); and

WHEREAS, members hold bimonthly meetings at Moody Hall at the Virginia Military Institute to discuss the needs of military personnel, veterans, and their families along with proposals to meet those needs; and

WHEREAS, members actively promote state and national bipartisan legislation benefitting military personnel, veterans, and their families; and

WHEREAS, through individual contributions and public fundraising events, the Chapter has been the top contributor, among all veterans service organizations chapters, posts, and detachments in Virginia for this and the last three fiscal years, to the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter supported the local Lexington Army National Guard unit by donating sufficient funds to “Buy the Bus” to get soldiers home from training in Indiana for a short furlough period prior to deployment to Kosovo; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter has been a key financial supporter of the Care-Box Project, which has sent over 1,000 packages to deployed service members from its area; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter’s Gold Bar program presents the first set of Lieutenant/Ensign bars and a free one-year membership to the Association to cadets from the Virginia Military Institute, Washington and Lee University, Southern Virginia University, and Mary Baldwin College; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter supports two high schools from Lynchburg by making annual cash donations to the schools’ leader training programs and presents the Association’s Junior ROTC medal to distinguished cadets annually; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter has been recognized in Military Officers Association of America national publications and received Association awards for its initiative and dedication to military personnel, veterans, and their families; and

WHEREAS, the Chapter has been designated a Five Star Chapter of Excellence by the Military Officers Association of America every year since formed; this is the Association’s highest ranking nationwide that is achieved by very few chapters; and

WHEREAS, the members play an outstanding role in all matters affecting those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom and their families and in making Virginia the most friendly state for military personnel, veterans, and their families; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend the George C. Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America and its dedicated members for their devotion to service personnel, veterans, and their families who have sacrificed to preserve the freedoms Virginians all hold dear; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the George C. Marshall Chapter of the Military Officers Association of America as an expression of the General Assembly’s respect and admiration.
