WHEREAS, the Campus Kitchen at The College of William & Mary is recognized for its outstanding service to people in need in the Williamsburg area and for the organization’s goal of serving 10,000 meals by April 2010; and

WHEREAS, the Campus Kitchen at The College of William & Mary (CKWM) is a unique student-run nonprofit organization; and

WHEREAS, the mission of CKWM is twofold; first, to recover food that would otherwise be wasted, which is largely done through contacts at local grocery stores; and second, to turn this recovered food into healthy, nutritious meals for local low-income clients; and

WHEREAS, CKWM is a member of the national nonprofit organization Campus Kitchens Project (CKP), and is currently one of 25 campus sites in the country and one of three in Virginia; CKP is an affiliate of the DC Central Kitchen, which was founded by nonprofit innovator Robert Egger; and

WHEREAS, founded in the fall of 2007, CKWM has expanded to serve approximately 140 clients each week; and

WHEREAS, the number of College of William & Mary students involved with CKWM has increased dramatically, with approximately 300 students volunteering with the organization each year; and

WHEREAS, in the fall of 2009, CKWM moved its operations to the Williamsburg Presbyterian Church, allowing the organization to accept both student volunteers and volunteers from the Williamsburg community; and

WHEREAS, the enthusiastic CKWM staff and volunteers proudly will serve their 10,000th meal in April 2010, an accomplishment that has taken approximately two and a half years; and

WHEREAS, CKWM will celebrate this significant milestone by holding a free carnival for all its clients, as well as hosting a gala dinner to raise money for the organization; and

WHEREAS, CKWM staff and volunteers look forward to meeting the next goal, serving another 10,000 meals in record time; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, That the General Assembly hereby commend and congratulate the Campus Kitchen at The College of William & Mary for its goal of serving 10,000 meals by April 2010; and, be it

RESOLVED FURTHER, That the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this resolution for presentation to the Campus Kitchen at The College of William & Mary as an expression of the General Assembly’s gratitude for CKWM’s commitment to helping people in need in the Williamsburg community.
